Twitter

Surgical tweets! What next? Surgeons sending tweets from the operating theatre? Earlier this year the Henry Ford Hospital pioneered this idea by sending live tweets or microblogging messages about the progress of procedures! One of the proponents extols the virtue of educating the public on innovative medical cases. Find out more here and here..

Twitter is the best known of the microblogging sites but there are others such as such as Tumblr, Posterous and Soup.io.

Browsers

The world of browsers and search engines is becoming a good deal more competitive. You like Google and want speed – have a look at Google chrome. Firefox also claims to be the faster, safer, smarter way to browse the Web – new version is Firefox v 3.5. Another new device is Maxthon – it claims to 100% free of viruses, spyware, adware – any kind of malware. It automatically blocks harmful, or just irritating ads, images and pages. It is also very adaptable and readily customised.

Conversion and Collaboration

Free online file conversion. For example to download YouTube videos simply paste the url into the Zamzar utility and you can download the converted file. You specify the file format. Very good.

Surgery for diabetes

Increasing evidence demonstrates that bariatric surgery can dramatically ameliorate type 2 diabetes. Not surprisingly, gastrointestinal operations are now being used throughout the world to treat diabetes in association with obesity, and increasingly, for diabetes alone. However, the role for surgery in diabetes treatment is not clearly defined and there are neither clear guidelines for these practices nor sufficient plans for clinical trials to evaluate the risks and benefits of such "diabetes surgery."

Beta blockers and surgery

Beta-blocker treatment before and after surgery is appropriate for patients undergoing high-risk, aortic, major vascular, or peripheral vascular surgery. Beta-blocker treatment also may benefit patients scheduled for intermediate-risk surgery, such as abdominal, carotid, head and neck, and major urological surgery. New guidelines from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) suggest starting beta-blocker treatment about 1 month before scheduled surgery in selected patients; at a minimum, the drug should be started at least a week before surgery and current evidence shows that the use of perioperative beta-blockers reduces the risk of myocardial infarction.
