Tour de France
This month, Glasgow vascular surgeon, Dominique Byrne has just completed his amazing cycle Tour de France. The total distance was 3103km – many of the stages were the exacting alpine routes which has made the official Tour so well known. This incredible effort was set up to raise funds for Eagle Aid – a charity which seeks to help child land-mine victims in Kosovo .Dominique assembled a “peloton” of companions – including several other Glasgow clinicians (a vascular surgeon, an orthopod, a cardiologist, a GP and a radiologist). His two sons also rode in the group as well as contributing to the support team. All in all it was inspirational and you can read about the event stage by stage and see all the action on the official website. You are not too late to make a contribution! Any donations will go directly to help the children affected by landmines in Kosovo.

The NHS is 60!

To celebrate the 60 th anniversary of the NHS there are various attempts to reminisce and share memories and images. Here are a couple of sites you might be interested to see. The Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board site has some good material.

To continue on a historical theme I happened upon the University of Glasgow Medical Faculty site commemorating famous scholars in medicine from the university going back to the eighteenth century. Some good historical vignettes to be found…

New waiting time proposals

A new 12 week legally-binding, waiting-time guarantee has been proposed in Scotland. Patients who cannot be treated within this new interval could be sent elsewhere – even overseas, for surgery.

Cyberknife

The CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System is the world's only robotic radio surgery system designed to treat tumours anywhere in the body non-invasively and with sub-millimetre accuracy.

Hi speed photography

Just a little trivia to wind up this month. I came across some pretty interesting images if you are looking for something to add some pzazz to presentations etc. There are numerous excellent high speed photography galleries. A good way to spend some time when the clinic slows down a bit! Here is a starter.

Wildllife watching
Idle moments also led me here. Astonishing photography! Enjoy.

Till next month...

Don't forget to send Eagle Aid your cheque! And don't forget to register for the Triennial events.

Best wishes
