Blogs
You must have noticed the dramatic rise of the blog (truncated from weblog). It seems as though there are blogs to cater for every conceivable interest. A blog, for the uninitiated, is essentially a web site where entries are made sequentially and are usually listed chronologically. Thus individuals can publish their news, thoughts or commentaries on whatever subject takes their fancy. The rise of the medical and surgical blog is also upon us and I decided to highlight a few notable surgical contributions this month.

General surgery for surgeons
A real mix of clinical topics, cases and opinions. Worth a look. The archived material is neatly categorised and is easy to navigate although there is not a huge amount of response traffic.

Daily Digests
Daily digests by specialty - excellent resource if you have the time to plough through the output. Sign up here

Personal projects
Here is where they all are. I have been hunting for sites written and prepared by individual colleagues. Well the richest seam so far is to be found in the blogosphere! Here are some notable personal contributions from colleagues around the globe.

Surgeonsblog
Wherein a surgeon tells some stories, shares some thoughts, and occasionally shoots off his mouth. Like a surgeon.

Chris Oliver's blog
Christopher Oliver is an orthopaedic and trauma surgeon in Edinburgh and has a highly acclaimed "blogspot". He records his own personal journey to health and it is both interesting and frank. Since I had a small part to play and get a mention I decided to highlight his story. Have a look - inspiring stuff.

Scalpel or Sword?
Because sometimes you need more than a scalpel!

The Angry Medic
The Angry Medic is "an idiot who got into Cambridge University by virtue of his unusually attractive eyelashes. He is currently ranting and raving his way through the freakshow and wide-screen madness that is the medical course at Cambridge University, and finds time to express an opinion on medicine, social issues, and anything else he considers pains in the gluteal region."

Addicted to medblogs
This is much more light hearted. Ranges from the irreverent to the slightly dodgy. With that introduction - can you stay away?

A chance to cut
A perspective on medical and other issues from a general surgeon

Surgical Diversions
Here a surgeon brings together lots of (geek laden) stuff as he spends his "time out of the operating room."

Fingers and Tubes!
Intriguing name. Notes, quotes and anecdotes of all sorts. Also you will find a large number of links to other medical and surgical blogs. If you find any wirth sharing let me know.

Have a great summer. Mine has been over punctuated by excursions in intercollegiate politics but there is nothing of compelling substance to report. Suprised? Till next month...best wishes.
