Open Abdomen
NICE, with advice from several Specialist Societies, has been developing guidance for Negative Pressure Wound Therapy for management of the open abdomen (laparostomy). This has resulted from notification from a specialist unit concerned about the number patients referred with intestinal fistulae following its use. The contribution of the negative pressure therapy (including the way in which it is applied) to the development of the fistulae is unclear, but a causative link is credible and a possible safety issue.cannot be ignored. See the NICE site for more detail.

Exam revision

There are some good resources for those approaching the Intercollegiate FRCS exam. This site is peppered with common sense and not a little cynicism and has been prepared by those for whom the exam experience seems still be be a little raw!

Also visit the similar tools on the Surgical Tutor site. This site contains educational material aimed at those preparing for undergraduate and postgraduate surgical examinations. It includes clinical tutorials, a journal club, multiple choice questions, revision notes, slide library, discussion group and more...

If you are off to travel this summer - stay safe.

Best wishes
