Joint College Regional Advisors in Surgery

We are exploring closer cooperation with our colleagues in Edinburgh to set up a network of College advisors to provide links to the benefits and services which we want to be more readily available to Fellows and Members. We are also keen to extend a welcome and offer some benefit to undergraduates who may be interested in pursuing a surgical career. The particular areas where we see potential involvement include guidance in recertification (when we finally get to see the shape this will take), support for training and external QA and careers advice - there will be more of course. I will keep you up to date with developments.

ScarLESS

Where will it all end? ScarLESS is the name of a Symposium on Laparo-Endoscopic Single Site Surgery being held in the MATTU training unit in Guildford. The teaching faculty is international in scope. Both general GI, bariatric and urological procedures will feature and this is a chance to learn about, and have some hands on training in LESS. It is a one day event and the registration deadline is very close. The cost is £150.

ISCP

The Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme is now functioning at a really useful level. If you have never looked at this site you should - it contains all the details you need in relation to the surgical curriculum for every specialty and it is broken down to explain the levels of competence which should be the targets for trainees at each stage of their programme. It also provides the key to all the work place based assessments and log book information. It has proved to be the essential tool for monitoring a trainee's progress and all trainers need to be conversant with this resource.

Gray's Anatomy

A free online version of this is available. An old classic - it has been reinvented on the net and is worth a look. An alternative source is here.
