Web highlights

From David Galloway, Vice President (Surgical)

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow

February 2007

This message has been put together by way of an experiment. Hopefully you will find some items of interest. I think that there is a need for Fellows and Members to be kept up to date with some of the manoeuvrings within the intercollegiate world and I hope to do this with an occasional e-mail. I also plan to pick out some surgical highlights from the web and provide you with the links. Naturally, I can only mention material I have come across so additional suggestions for inclusion will be very welcome. Also, I think it would be of particular interest to feature any sites which have been uploaded by our own Fellows or Members. In this category I have included a link to one of the most unusual and most spectacular sites I have seen. It is current, features a local Glasgow surgeon and a most unusual hobby…

First though …

Surgical exams

The new exit exam has arrived and the first four of the nine specialties have held the first diet of the new written test item question paper. Candidates have to successfully negotiate this before being considered eligible to sit the new style clinical examination. This has also been restructured and rendered much more valid and reliable than the “old style” assessment. Many of you who are involved as trainers will be asked to provide references for trainees who wish to present themselves for examination. Please observe the detailed guidance notes available for referees.

The next annual meeting of the ASGBI is due to take place from 18th – 20th April 2007 in Manchester. Get the latest programme and registration details from the link above.

Andrew McMahon
Andrew is a general / colorectal surgeon in Stobhill General Hospital in Glasgow. When he is not stamping out disease he indulges in some interesting photographic opportunities. Check out the phenomenal results on his site. Click any of the photos below to gain access to the rest!

I will be very pleased to hear from you especially if you have sites or links which you think I could highlight in future. Finally, since I represent General Surgery on the Scottish Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee please get in touch about any burning issue which you think needs to be fed back to the CMO. In particular the Scottish Executive is keen to know about service gaps, workforce planning problems and, of course, MMC. I will be very pleased to hear from you - please do get in touch either via the College or directly by clicking right here.

Best wishes,
